From the UCC Network: Devotional for 11/18 "No Dead Endings"

No Dead Endings
Excerpt from Hebrews 9:23-28
“And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment.”
Reflection by Kenneth L. Samuel
From the western border of Alabama to the eastern border of South Carolina, Interstate 20 cuts through the state of Georgia.  If you were to travel I20 east outside of downtown Atlanta for about 15 miles, you would come to the Panola Road exit.  To get to my house, you’d make a left onto Panola and follow it until it dead ends.  But the dead end of Panola Road doesn’t mean that you can’t go any further.  It just means that you have to make a turn onto another street.  It’s the street off of which I live.
The very thought of dead ends seem to make us want to just stop.  We anticipate the final period.  We sense the approaching finality.  We rarely expect to go any further.  But what about the homes, the people, the streets and the opportunities that God places at the very end of dead-end roads?  What about the turning points at the very end of dead-end streets?  What about the journey on a new road after the journey on the one we’ve travelled for so long has come to an end?
We may not be quite certain what to expect after death, but thank God we can expect something.  Dead-end relationships, dead-end jobs, dead-end experiences and dead-end roads all lead us to turning points in life.  Turning points that let us know that in God there really are no periods, just commas; no terminations, just transitions.
If you ever find yourself at the dead end of Panola Road in Georgia, don’t despair.  If you make the right turn, you’ll be real close to my house… where life goes on.
Prayer
Dear Lord, for every dead-end road that I face today, please show me the turning point into new life.  Amen.
