Getting Results
Excerpt from 1 Corinthians 15:12-20
"If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied."
Reflection by William C. Green
How good is your faith? How effective is your parenting? How well are you spending your time? "Outcomes measurement and evaluation" is the tool of the day for assessing organizational and staff performance. It's featured as well in "life-management" books, videos, and weekend seminars. How can you get the best results from your time and efforts, your love, responsibility, and generosity? Satisfaction can be calculated and stress reduced by methods that work.
We can forget that what counts is not always something we can measure—any more than Jesus could. No one, including Jesus, could see anything good resulting from his crucifixion. If Jesus had this capacity he would not truly be one of us. We cannot fathom the depths of evil, suffering, and injustice. But Jesus spent his life for something that outlasted it and withstood the ravages of life.
Wanting results we can get discouraged and give up if we focus mainly on what we can understand and figure out. Had Jesus done that, no lasting good could have ensued and no hope for us. Instead, he simply did what he had to do. He kept on keeping on, loving, caring, praying, and remembering that his job was to help and heal as best he could. He was to plant the seeds, not reap the harvest. And so it is for us.
Prayer
May we trust the results you make possible as we’re carried by you, God, in the spirit and example of Jesus. Amen.
